Crib

"Crib," a massive figurative piece built of cardboard found on city streets, was conceived as a site-specific work for the San Cristina Hotel, a residence for formerly homeless people located in a particularly gritty part of San Francisco.

As an emphatic exclamation point for a marginalized community, its identity and attitude were purposefully ambiguous, but its construction served as an affirmation of the human form. Response to the sculpture was overwhelmingly positive. The residents and street people of the area claimed a connection to the work with a certain pride that arises from personal experience and empathy.
