The Peplos Kore is an ancient Greek statue of a young woman which was created for the Acropolis in Athens around 530 BC. This sculpture is made from strips of shredded, recycled, packaging cardboard woven over a plywood armature and sealed with light resistant UV polymers. In depicting a precious cultural artifact, the sculpture responds to it’s siting amidst the other art in the airport gallery, and it’s presentation inside in a plexiglass display case. The sculpture’s archaic style and the inherent “value” is contrasted by the use of cardboard, a discarded by-product of consumer culture. The many colors recreates the way the origianl Greek sculpture was also brightly painted - an adorned, if gaudy object. Installed 2005 San Francisco Airport Terminal Gallery 5.5' x 20" x 18" |
